for the New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC)

What is the New York International ‘Fringe’ Festival?

The New York International Fringe Festival is the largest multi-arts festival in North America. FringeNYC hosts more than 200 different shows, with groups from all over the world, and takes place in New York City each August.

It is an alternative theatre festival, with many new works as well as some classics, meant to give the smaller theatre companies a bigger voice. It is a chance to take a chance. With shows generally ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, FringeNYC is a place to see as much theatre as one possibly can and at the end of it all, find not exhaustion, but inspiration.

In addition to over 1,000 indoor performances, there will be: FringeU (panel discussions, lectures and participant led workshops); FringeJR (for families & groups with children);FringeAL FRESCO (free outdoor events); FringeNYC Propaganda (the Festival newspaper we publish); FringeHIGH (FringeNYC for teens); and FringeCLUB ( place for FringeNYC participants and audience to unwind and socialize).

We are best known as the birthplace of Broadway’s Tony-Award winning Urinetown! and off-Broadway’s Matt & BenDebbie Does DallasCarnival Knowledge and The Joys of Sex.

Where is FringeNYC?
Participating companies will perform their shows in over 20 different venues, parks and street stages in downtown Manhattan. Our venues are located in geographic proximity to each other generating many opportunities for artists and audience to create a community, which grows stronger every year. Lovely theatres such as Cherry Lane Studio, the Lucille Lortel Theater and theaters at PACE University will be turned into 24-hour venues, each hosting at least ten different companies. Directors, designers, producers and performers converge in an environment unlike any other.

Be assured you will meet people and have a chance to see shows!

When is FringeNYC?
The New York International Fringe Festival takes place each August, ending the Sunday prior to Labor Day Weekend. However, the preparations for FringeNYC start now!

FringeNYC will celebrate its 14th Anniversary August 13th - 29th, 2010.

FringeNYC? Although FringeNYC is a production of The Present Theatre Company, Inc., it takes:
75,000 audience members
5,000 artists
2,000 registered volunteers
1,200 performances
200 shows
20 venues
16 days
15 dollar advance tickets and
2 full-time employees

to make FringeNYC happen.

We do this? Good question! In 1997, our budget was $74,000. Today, it's more than a million dollars. We must seek and secure support from donors in order to "bridge the gap" between rising costs and our desire to keep ticket prices low. Your donation helps us grow to meet the challenges of the future!  Support of FringeNYC has a tremendous impact on indie theatre. We appreciate it!
