Piccola Cosi - BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
Piccola Cosi
a solo show
Written and Performed by Aja Nisenson

5 Performances May 26th through May 30th at the DR2 Theatre as part of the 6th Annual soloNOVA Arts Festival

YOU'LL LAUGH. YOU'LL CRY. YOU'LL CRAVE PROSCIUTTO AND RED WINE.

New York, NY-- After a sold-out run in the 2008 International Fringe Festival, Piccola Cosi, a solo show, written and performed by Aja Nisenson is back for 5 performances May 26th through May 30th at the DR2 Theatre (103 East 15th Street) as part of the 6th annual soloNOVA Arts Festival. The DR2 Theatre heats up this spring as actor singer/playwright Aja Nisenson takes her audience on a hysterical and provocative ride through the underbelly of Bologna's jazz scene. Playing herself and the eight Italian men she encounters, twenty-one year old Aja comes of age as she pursues her dream of becoming a jazz singer with the help of more than a few eager Italian men.

Conceived as a playwriting thesis during Aja's senior year at Brown University, Piccola Cosi, which in Italian means "small like this," is a sprawling cacophony of Italian culture and a young woman's own fractured understanding of it, where pizzas walk across tables and men appear as smoke in doorways.

PRESS:

“As full of talent as she is of spaghetti, she recalls in vivid, sidesplitting detail her trip through Italy as a 21-year-old virgin who becomes a sought-after jazz singer… Nisenson is a natural storyteller, with an ear for impersonations and an eye for glamorous and gritty detail.”
--BACKSTAGE

“I saw this show twice… After that first time, I cried—not immediately, but in the street. I cried over risk, over sexuality, over danger as success and safety as failure, over being a woman and an artist. Isn't that what theatre does at its best—cut you to the core?”
--NYTHEATRE.COM

“ Like Sarah Silverman, Nisenson dresses her hot self simply—all in black, with comfy sneakers…an engaging portrait of that special time of life when nascent adults go overseas to find themselves, and end up getting into cars with strangers.”
--TIME OUT NEW YORK **** (Four Stars)

AJA NISENSON is an actor, singer, playwright originating from New Jersey. Aja earned a B.A. in Theater Arts with a Capstone in Playwriting at Brown University where she studied with Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel and award winning Producer/ Director/ Playwright/ Dramaturg Bonnie Metzgar. Aja's one-woman show, Piccola Cosi, about her experience as a jazz singer in Bologna, Italy, received critical acclaim and had a sold out run in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival. A trained pop, jazz, musical theatre and opera singer, Aja has sung jazz with renown musicians in venues in and around Italy. She has also worked behind the scenes with the Metropolitan Opera House, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Director's Company, Voice and Vision and Joe's Pub. Aja was seen on the Brown/Trinity Playwrights Repertory stage in the original musical Torah! Torah! Torah! Other credits include: Merrily We Roll Along, Hot 'N' Throbbing, The Greeks, Syringa Tree, Bobrauschenbergamerica, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Aja was the recipient of the 2007 Weston Award for Acting.

One Night Only! Thursday April 30th @ 7pm at The Triad Theatre. 158 West 72nd St.

AN HYSTERICAL PROVOCATIVE RIDE THROUGH THE UNDERBELLY OF BOLOGNA'S JAZZ SCENE. YOU'LL LAUGH. YOU'LL CRY. YOU'LL CRAVE PROSCIUTTO AND RED WINE.

New York, NY-- After a sold-out run in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival, Piccola Cosi is back on April 30th at the Triad Theatre, 158 West 72nd Street, New York City. The Triad heats up this spring as actor/ singer/playwright Aja Nisenson takes her audience on a funny and provocative ride through the underbelly of Bologna's jazz scene. Playing herself and the eight Italian men she encounters, twenty-one year old Aja comes of age as she pursues her dream of becoming a jazz singer, with the help of more than a few eager Italian men. This smoky, sexy, comedic solo show is fiery as a shot of grappa.

Conceived as a playwriting thesis during Aja's senior year at Brown University, Piccola Cosi, which in Italian means "small like this," is a "sprawling cacophony of Italian culture and a young woman's own fractured understanding of it, where pizzas walk across tables and men appear as smoke in doorways."

--TIME OUT NEW YORK

“The gorgeous Aja Nisenson demonstrates she can do it all in an autobiographical show about discovering herself in Italy, during which she sings jazz (and a bit of opera), impersonates the colorful people she met with wit and charm, and tells hilarious stories."

AMERICANBLACKOUT (FringeNYC '06) RETURNS!
A gay Black man walks into a casting call and, with each question thrown his way, suddenly realizes that he has forgotten how to breathe. Has lost all concept of the process of inhale and exhale.

Is this real or a fantasy? Is his identity truly being called into question, or are his perceptions a figment of his imagination?

AMERICANBLACKOUT is a modern-day journey through the labyrinth of sexuality, ethnicity and individual identity in the land of the free. A view of America as it struggles through the present, remains unsure of the future, and, in a willfully ignorant fashion, turns a blind eye to the past.

KRAPP 39 - EXTENDED BY POPULAR DEMAND!
A prefiguring of Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape,” and a deeply personal exploration of the mysteries of aging and the end of youth.

Reeling on his 39th birthday, an actor’s obsessive identification with Beckett’s famous character, compels him to examine his own quixotic life and failures. Replacing Krapp’s reel-to reel with the latest in video technology and, he sets out on a hilarious and heartbreaking journey of self-deprecation and self-discovery.

The critics pick of the Off-Broadway season, "Krapp, 39" now extended through April 5th, here's what they say:

“Mr. Laurence gives a superb performance in a beautifully shaped, beautifully revealed work... Tremendously poignant...” - NY Times

“Krapp, 39 is no mere Beckett riff, it’s a thoughtful response, a valuable contribution, a thing of startling, wounding beauty.” Village Voice

“Well-written and expertly performed…Laurence creates a funny and lacerating self-portrait that earns its affiliation with the classic that inspired it…” - The New Yorker

Stand back, Jeffrey Dahmer. Meet the serial killer next door.

He's mild-mannered. He looks like somebody you'd see at the hardware store. But inside he is a cold-hearted murderer.

Of course, he doesn't think he's a murderer. He follows his romantic delusions to horrific extremes, preying on young men--hoping to create a zombie who will be his forever.

Blanche Survives Katrina in a FEMA Trailer Named Desire

Written & performed by Mark Sam Rosenthal
Directed By Todd Parmley

One natural disaster strikes another! A refugee story whose politics and pathos you have read but never experienced through the eyes of Tennessee Williams’ tragic heroine, the desperately deliberately fragile alcoholic codependent sex-addicted Blanche DuBois – America’s most broken woman™.

FIVE STARS “…a thoughtful, laugh-out-loud story based on one film icon’s descent into reality: hilarious, a little bit heartbreaking and really smart.” Time Out NY

“… a loving tribute to a dazzling character and an unforgiving political commentary.” Backstage

“… a cleverly crafted (if casually racist) and surprisingly touching monologue that’ll have you jotting down one-liners on your program.” HX

In Samuel Beckett’s “vaudeville pantomime” Krapp’s Last Tape, a 69-year-old man dictates his thoughts into a tape recorder, as he does every year on his birthday. Reeling on his own 39th birthday, Michael Laurence conducts a multi-media reflection on his identification with Beckett’s character: his fears, his failures, and his search for (and forfeiture of) love, all in preparation to record a version of the 39-year-old Krapp’s soliloquy to be used in an imagined production of Krapp’s Last Tape in the year 2038. The journey spans Michael’s readings and research, recorded telephone conversations, letters, and personal journal entries. Krapp, 39 is a deeply personal window on one man’s last moment of youth.
