The Present Company's "The Pool"

The Pool is an artists’ workshop for the creation and presentation of new plays in which New York’s best actors and directors collaborate on an on-going basis with some of today’s most exciting playwrights. The goal is to provide an alternative to the traditional readings offered at most theaters by giving writers an opportunity to develop their work and see it on its feet when they’re ready. Member artists meet regularly to work on plays-in-progress and once a month to present a mini-workshop of one writer’s full-length work for an invited audience. The Pool also serves as a means of building a sense of community among theater artists and cultivating an atmosphere of respect, support, and mutual inspiration.

Additionally, it fills a significant need for us as producers of The New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC). You see, because of the enormity of the festival, we don't get to produce as much of our own work as we'd like. The Pool functions as an artistic intermission every other week amidst the administrative tiger that is FringeNYC. Every other Monday a group of incredibly talented and dedicated writers, directors, and actors spend three hours developing a new play. We try to serve the play, and simultaneously serve as a breath of inspiration and artistic satisfaction for everyone involved.
